The Life and Ministry of John Alexander Dowie

It's amazing that when I took a formal course in the history of revivals several years ago, this man's name was never mentioned, but yet he was more or less, the grandfather of what we might call the modern divine healing movement.

John Alexander Dowie was a great man of God. People either loved him or hated him. Some devoted their whole life to this man and others tried to kill him. Through this man God brought back into the church the ministry and the gifts of divine healing, working of miracles, and everyone of us have been blessed.

John Alexander Dowie was born in Edinburgh Scotland May the 25th and 1847. This young man was born into a family that was very poor. He knew what poverty was when he was growing up, and he was very sickly, and he missed school a lot. And, but yet he was very intelligent, he was very bright. And he said in his life's story as he recalled it many years later that some of the other boys would lend him their lessons and their books and he would read them, and he absorbed everything that he read. No doubt he had an extremely high I.Q. and would you believe, he read the Bible all the way through at the age of six years old. He had an inclination for God. He had a thirst for the Lord Jesus Christ. And being raised in that staunch Presbyterian atmosphere, he absorbed a lot, but yet he felt somewhat empty.
